Stand up and cheer men of Carmel
Cheer for the team on the field.
We’re out to fight for the old brown and white.
We’re out to win victory. Rah, Rah, Rah.

Shoulder to shoulder in battle.
No matter what the odds may be.
30 yards, 20 yards, 10 yards touchdown.
Victory.

Brown and White Song:

Oh brown and white fight, fight and win this game,
and we will carry on for Carmel fame.
No foe to you too strong must ever be,
in your march to victory.

So carry on then every loyal son,
until this game is won.
Fight, fight – Carmel fight.
For the good old brown and white.

Ishmael Smith (2011) helps make Landmark Case.
On Wednesday, February 10, the Chicago City Council voted to confer land mark status on a three-flat at 6140 South Rhodes Avenue in Woodlawn. The vote culminated a three-year effort led by two History Fair students and their teacher to gain recognition for historic significance of the home.

In 2007, Ishmael Smith and Bryanna Stalling, students at Amelia Earhart Elementary School, completed a History Fair project with the guidance of teacher Stacy Stewart. The students studied Carl Hansberry’s three-year legal battle to fight restrictive racial covenants in a case that went to the US Supreme Court. Ms. Stewart says the students were struck by the family’s courage and how their challenge of discriminatory housing practices paved the way for integrated neighborhoods. Inspired by what they learned about the bravery of Carl Hansberry and his family, they nominated the house for landmark status. Three years later, the Chicago City Council agreed and the Hansberry House is now recognized as a historic landmark. As Ishmael, who is now a junior at Mount Carmel High School said, “The house is a symbol that anything is possible in America.”

Many may recall the book and film called “Raisin In The Sun”. Hansberry House is where it all occurred.

Steven Michael Bajenski Scholarship Foundation:
Steven Bajenski (fondly known as Budgie) was an impact player in the game of life. He was a Senior 2nd baseman for his Mount Carmel Caravan baseball team. He was going to be the Caravan Captain and team leader this year, but on August 28th 2009, his life was unexpectedly cut short from complications following heart surgery. He lived a lifetime in his 17 short years. Stevie had a true passion for life, which centered around his love for family, friends, MC & baseball. Although his time with us wasn’t long enough, he touched thousands of lives. Stevie taught us each day is a gift. Be happy, be thankful, & live each day to the fullest. Only worry about what you can control, not what you cannot. Play the cards dealt to you without complaint. Do it the right way & you’ll never have any regrets. View adversity as merely another challenge to overcome. Don’t ever back down. Be a man of character and integrity. Always follow the golden rule. Be a team player. Make a difference everyday!

CARMEL SERVICE MAN’S PRAYER
TO OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

You were the light that one time lit my schoolbook’s page
Tutor my mind to see the right, free from all rage

You were the gracious Queen who crowned victorious play;
Mother, the stakes are heavy now, with life and death to pay.

You were the model then of how a boy should live,
When life lay bright ahead and all that life could give;

Now if it be that I should lie where heroes fall,
Teach me that last and hardest lesson of all.

Mother, be with me now as in former day;
This hour my feet are set on new and perilous ways.

Joachim Smet, O.Carm.

Legacy:

You are welcome to submit the names of young men of any age who may be future Mount Carmel students. An online form and PDF form are available here: http://www.mchs.org/development/LegacyCampaign.php

Classic Car Raffle:
’57 Chevy Bel Air & ’57 Buick Roadmaster, Donated by Bob Scurio ’53.
 Bob Scurio ’53 is supporting a music program at Mount Carmel.
They just don’t build them like they used to: the reflective chrome, the roomy interiors. Long before the days of compact cars, bucket seats and CD changers, Buick and Chevrolet made cars that their owners drove just a few miles per hour slower so everyone could get a closer look down the main street of town.

Individuals now have the opportunity to purchase a chance at taking home one or both of these classic automobiles for $100 per ticket. A maximum of 3,000 tickets will be sold. One ticket gives you 2 chances to win one of these cars, making the odds 1 out of 1,500. You must be 18 years of age or older to purchase raffle tickets.

The ’57 Chevy Bel Air 4-door Hardtop has a black exterior complimented by a silver and black interior. The original straight six “Blue Flame” engine was replaced with a 350 V-8. The original power glide transmission was replaced with a three-speed turbo automatic transmission; it has an after marked cruise control. It also has power brakes, power steering and power windows. It also has Vintage air conditioning and heat, and carries a much sought after license plate, “Chevy 57”.

The ’57 Buick Roadmaster was advertised by Buick as “Luxury without Limit”. The series 75R was a mid year upgrade to the Roadmaster line that included an upgraded trim package. This extremely rare car (only 2,404 were produced) was made in October 1957. The exterior is two-tone green. The interior is an OPULENT two tone green. It has an original rebuilt 364cui V-8 engine, variable pitch dynaflow three-speed automatic transmission, power brakes, six-way power front seat, power steering and windows. A Wondarbar sonamatic signal-seeking AM radio with power telescope antenna, a tissue dispenser, a visor vanity mirror and door edge guards complete this package. It too has a special Illinois plate, “BUICK 57”.

For more information contact Celeste Rupcich at 773-324-1020, ext. 228 or crupcich@mchs.org. You can also purchase tickets through the mail by downloading an order form at www.mchs.org/development/carraffle.
